So my job has me doing relatively little thus far. I'm hoping that this changes...but then I'll probably be singing a different tune when I'm knee deep in briefs and motions.
So far:
I am on my feet all day long - running from courtroom to courtroom and such. It's ...uhhh..a lot of fun.
Some judges do not eat ever and so do not recess for lunch...ever. Day one - was advised to pack small treats in my pockets to sneak-eat while in court. Day two - learned to wear clothes that have pockets (grrr).
Shysters are alive and well.
Deputies are awesome and I try to befriend every one I meet. I'm pretty sure they won't let me get shot/stabbed/shanked/shived or spat upon.
Jury selection can be very interesting and very boring at the same time.
My shoes which appear to have no metal..actually do...and they set off the metal detectors all the time.
Having a secured access card is way better than not having a secured access card.
At some point I'm sure that I will stop relating the cases to my own life - but for now it's hard not to. It's still a bit staggering to me what people do to one another and how widespread it seems to be. I've got to find ways to spend time with normal law abiding citizens in order to keep perspective. All in all, I like my job and the work I'll be doing...so far.
